Fighting the Bingo Tax
Posted on August 21, 2009 by Rachel Wright
That tax rate increase that has raised bingo taxes from only 15 per cent all the way up to 22 per cent is being fought. Not only has it created a lot of suffering for all the bingo online sites, but many bingo clubs everywhere.
In fact John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP, has tried to get the UK Government to freeze this increase they have. Bingo halls have been hit hard across the UK and Edinburgh due to this increase. Many of them are actually dangerously close to having to close down.
Right now only 600 locations are in the UK that remains open, 60 total halls have had to close over the last two years already. Barrett is urging the Prime Minister to consider the options.
He has stated that bingo can be a great way to bring a community together. Since there are only a few halls open at present, this increase will most likely end up in the closing of the few that have remained above water so far.
Bingo shouldn’t be used by the Government to earn cash; this latest increase in the tax rate will only accomplish bad things. The closing of the halls that are left in Scotland and possibly many of the ones in the UK.
